- The healthcare has become more effective at the same time it has also become more complex and involves the use of modern technologies, medicine, and treatment

- These factors, coupled with decreased financial resources in more settings, can result in errors
- The quality of any healthcare setting is its total system characteristics and without patient safety, there can be no quality of care
- Reducing and ultimately eliminating the medical errors is an urgent imperative in the healthcare organization
- Healthcare safety comprehends all healthcare setting and includes the patient and staff experience as well as the clinical, environmental and services aspects of safety
- Whether the focus is on medications or surgery, the goals are the same as to ensure patients are being treated in an absolutely safe environment

- Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS) is an evidence-based set of teamwork tools designed to optimize team function, and ultimately patient outcomes
- It is designed to improve the quality, safety, and the efficiency of healthcare
- TeamSTEPPS is based on 25 years of research related to teamwork, team training, and culture change. As a direct outcome of the 1999 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, To Err is Human, TeamSTEPPS introduces tools and strategies to improve team performance in healthcare
- TeamSTEPPS has five key principles.It is consist of team structure and four teachable-learnable skills: Communication, Leadership, Situation Monitoring, and Mutual Support
TeamSTEPPS is an evidence-based framework to optimize team performance across the health care delivery system. TeamSTEPPS is a system designed for healthcare professionals that is:
- A potent solution to improving patient safety within the healthcare organization
- An evidence-based teamwork system to improve communication and teamwork skills among healthcare professionals
- Scientifically rooted training curriculum which successfully integrates teamwork principles into all areas of healthcare organizations.Since the significant proportion of preventable medical errors (approx. 65%) belongs to the improper team formulation and communication, therefore, the importance of TeamSTEPPS cannot be overlooked to overcome such preventable medical errors.
