As part of series of capacity building activities for healthcare professionals in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety Riphah Institute of Healthcare Improvement and Safety (RIHIS) has conducted Basic Course on Certificate Course on Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety, which was held on 30th and 31st January 2018 at Al Mizan IIMCT Complex, Main Conference Room and facilitated by highly qualified and renowned national experts of Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety.

The aim of this course was to impart basic knowledge and skills in Healthcare Quality and Patient safety so that participants become Quality and Patient Safety change agents to ensure Improvement in Healthcare and patient safety in their hospitals.

Patient safety is prevention of errors and adverse effects to patients associated with health care. While health care has become more effective, it has also become more complex, with greater use of new technologies, medicines and treatments.

The learning objectives of the course:

  • Facilitate learning of Healthcare Quality concepts and tools
  • Structure, process and outcomes Model of learning in Healthcare Quality
  • Develop and sustain a patient safety culture, patient centered care and just culture.
  • Certification and accreditation in Healthcare
  • Recognize the magnitude and the importance of patient safety
  • Become aware of the principles and methodologies in patient safety and how this relates to delivering safe and quality services to patients
  • Reflect on how patient safety practices can help to minimize the incidence and impact of medical errors, adverse events, and maximize recovery from them
  • Become aware of the range of tools, solutions and strategies to improve patient safety
  • Recognize the importance and be an advocate for a culture of safety in the workplace.

Target audience: Organization leadership, Management personal, Doctors, Dentists, Nurses, Pharmacists, Rehabilitation science graduates, and all healthcare providers can attend this course.

In this certificate course 14 healthcare professionals participated in which 1 participants (from Riphah College of Rehabilitation Sciences) was internal and 13 participants were external (from Fazia Medical College, Shifa International Hospital, Fauji Foundation Hospital, Al Khidmat Razi Hospital, Rehman Medical Institute Peshawar and Maroof International Hospital) were external who were keen to learn about Patient Safety and its implementation in the hospitals.

At the end of the 2 Days Certificate Course on “Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety (Basic Course)” participants were awarded the certificate from Riphah Institute of Healthcare Improvement and Safety which makes them certified Healthcare Quality Patient Safety Champions.

Lt. General (R) Prof. Dr. Azhar Rasheed Principal IIMC distributed certificates among the participants and appreciated the efforts of RIHIS team in conducting this course under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Matiur Rahman, Principal and Director of RIHIS

Participants were highly appreciative of the initiative of Mr. Hassan Muhammad Khan Chancellor Riphah International University and his team to take lead in efforts for creating a critical mass of Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety Champions to improve Healthcare Quality and Safety in Pakistan by establishing Riphah Institute of Healthcare improvement and Safety.

First Certificate Course on “Accreditation in Healthcare” was conducted by Riphah Institute of Healthcare Improvement at Al Mizan Campus, Main Conference Room with the aim of providing necessary knowledge and skills to healthcare Quality professionals to initiate process to get their hospital ISO or JCI Accredited.

Accreditation is a process of review that healthcare organizations participate in to demonstrate the ability to meet regulatory requirements and accreditation standards established by a recognized accreditation organization. Accreditation reflects an agency’s dedication and commitment to meeting standards that demonstrate a higher level of performance and patient care. Accreditation is regarded as one of the key benchmarks for measuring the quality of a hospital. Preparing for accreditation gives your hospital an opportunity to identify its strengths and areas for improvement.

This workshop provided necessary knowledge about different accreditation for hospitals with more emphasis on ISO certification and JCI accreditation process.

In this certificate course 18 healthcare related professionals participated in which 05 participants were internal (from Riphah University Affiliated Hospitals) and 13 participants were external (From Fazaia Medical college & Hospital, Fauji Foundation Hospital, Ali medical Center, Kulsoom Hospital ) who showed keen interest in learning process of ISO Certification and JCI Accreditation.

Participants belonged from hospitals which are either certified by ISO or have started ISO certification in their hospitals, they appreciated RIHIS, Riphah University for holding this course which will be a great help to them in their certification process. Some of the hospital participants showed interest in starting JCI accreditation process and requested RIHIS to facilitate them to do so.

Second Certificate Course on “Accreditation in Healthcare” was conducted by Riphah Institute of Healthcare Improvement at Board Room, G-7/4 Campus with the aim of providing necessary knowledge and skills to healthcare Quality professionals to initiate process to get their hospital MSDS (Punjab Healthcare commission),ISO or JCI Accredited.

Accreditation is a process of review that healthcare organizations participate in to demonstrate the ability to meet regulatory requirements and accreditation standards established by a recognized accreditation organization. Accreditation reflects an agency’s dedication and commitment to meeting standards that demonstrate a higher level of performance and patient care. This workshop provided necessary knowledge about different accreditation for hospitals with more emphasis on MSDS, ISO certification and JCI accreditation process.

In this certificate course 14 healthcare professionals participated in which 03 participants were internal (from Riphah International University and its Affiliated Hospitals) and 11 participants were external (From Bilal Hospital and Fauji Foundation Hospital Rawalpindi, Biocare Lab Islamabad and Fazl e Omer Hospital

Sargodha) who showed keen interest in learning process of MSDS,ISO Certification and JCI Accreditation.

Participants belonged from hospitals which are either certified by ISO or have started ISO and MSDS certification in their hospitals, they appreciated RIHIS, Riphah International University for holding this course which will be a great help to them in their certification process. Some of the hospital participants showed interest in starting JCI accreditation process and requested RIHIS to facilitate them to do so.

First Certificate Course on “Implementation of TeamSTEPPS” was conducted by Riphah Institute of Healthcare Improvement at Al Mizan Campus, RARE Conference Room with the aim of providing necessary knowledge and skills about Implementation of TeamSTEPPS:

TeamSTEPPS is a teamwork system designed by AHRQ USA for health care professionals that is:

  • A powerful solution to improving patient safety within your organization.
  • An evidence-based teamwork system to improve communication and teamwork skills among health care professionals.
  • A source for ready-to-use materials and a training curriculum to successfully integrate teamwork principles into all areas of your health care system.
  • Scientifically rooted in more than 20 years of research and lessons from the application of teamwork principles.
  • Developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Defense’s Patient Safety Program.

TeamSTEPPS improves the quality and safety of patient care by:

 

  • Producing highly effective medical teams that optimize the use of information, people, and resources to achieve the best clinical outcomes for patients.
  • Increasing team awareness and clarifying team roles and responsibilities.
  • Resolving conflicts and improving information sharing.
  • Eliminating barriers to quality and safety.

This workshop provided necessary knowledge and tools to implement TeamSTEPPS and proved to be very useful for the hospitals planning to implement Team STEPPS to improve Patient Safety, and want to get their staff trained to start the process in their hospitals. Participants appreciated Riphah International University for taking lead in developing Patient Safety professionals to ensure safety.

In this certificate course 21 healthcare related professionals participated in which 16 participants were internal (from Riphah University Affiliated Hospitals) and 05 participants were external (From Fazle Omar Hospital Sargodha, P.S.R.D Lahore, Fazaia Medical College Islamabad and Fauji Foundation Hospital, Rawalpindi) who showed keen interest in Implementation of TeamSTEPPS.

3 Days Certificate Course on “Patient Safety” was conducted by Riphah Institute of Healthcare Improvement and Safety with the main objective of to “Reduce medical errors with effective solutions”.

This course is first of the series of Courses and Workshops which will be delivered throughout the year to train hospital management and healthcare staff in Patient safety in Pakistan to ensure that patients, visitors and Medical staff are safe. This certificate course aims to provide the participants with knowledge to appreciate the importance of patient safety tools to implement and monitor patient safety practices in Hospitals, so as to be able to continuously improve the safety of patient care in their workplace.

The course contents of this course were:

  1. Introduction to Science of Safety
  1. Creation a culture of Safety
  1. Factors influencing Patient Safety and Quality
  1. Tools of Patient Safety
  1. Patient and Family involvement in Patient Safety
  1. International Patient Safety Goals, JCIA, USA

In this certificate course 20 healthcare related professionals participated in which 16 participants were internal and 4 participants were external who are keen to learn about Patient Safety and its implementation in the hospitals.

At the end of the 3 Days Certificate Course on “Patient Safety” participants were awarded the certificate from Riphah Institute of Healthcare Improvement and Safety which makes them certified Patient Safety Champions.

2 Days Certificate Course on “Patient Safety” was conducted by Riphah Institute of Healthcare Improvement and Safety with the main objective to introduce the concept and importance of Patient Safety and the Quality in Healthcare.

This course is first Institutional Workshop of the series which will be delivered throughout the year to train hospital management and healthcare staff in Patient safety in Pakistan to ensure that patients, visitors and Medical staff are safe. This certificate course aims to provide the participants with knowledge to appreciate the importance of patient safety tools to implement and monitor patient safety practices in Hospitals, so as to be able to continuously improve the safety of patient care in their workplace.

The course contents of this course were:

In this certificate course 25 healthcare related professionals participated. The mix of participants included Physicians, Medical Education staff, Nurses and Hospital Administrators who demonstrated a keenness to learn about Patient Safety and its implementation in the hospital.

At the end of the 2 Days Certificate Course on “Patient Safety” participants were awarded the certificate from Riphah Institute of Healthcare Improvement and Safety which makes them certified Patient Safety Champions.
